Concourse Communications Reports Surge in Airport WiFi Usage: 19% increase in 30 days

Chicago, IL – September 12, 2003Concourse Communications reports that total user sessions for its airport WiFi networks grew 19% in August over July, representing an annualized growth rate of over 600%. This indicates that airports are one of the fastest rising WiFi usage locations in the country.

“There are about 15 airports in North America equipped with airport-wide WiFi and we are one of the few neutral-host providers that support this service in multiple venues,” says Joe Beatty, CEO of Concourse Communications. “This puts us in a unique position to collect data on airport WiFi usage and our August data represents the most rapid growth in usage that we’ve seen to date,” he adds.

Analyst Monica Paolini of Senza Fili Consulting says, “The increase of WiFi traffic in airports confirms the trend towards an escalating usage of public WiFi service. Airports are ideal hotspot locations – as travelers wait for their plane to depart, they find it convenient to be wirelessly connected to the company intranet or to the Internet. Airports attract a significant share of public WiFi traffic and are playing an important role in promoting the use of WiFi hotspots.”

There will be around 12.8 million users of public WLAN services in the USA by 2007, with the total number of hotspots reaching 57 000 in locations such as airports, hotels and restaurants, according to Public Wireless LAN Access in Western Europe and the USA: market analysis and forecasts, a report published by Analysys, the global adviser on telecoms and new media.
