Concourse Communications Announces WiFi Phone Service Trial at Airports - Newark Liberty Is Initial Site, JFK and LaGuardia To Follow
HOUSTON, TX, SEPTEMBER 20, 2004 –
Concourse Communications Group, LLC, today announced an agreement with a national telecommunications service provider to conduct a trial of WiFi phone service at selected major U.S. airports. Newark Liberty has been chosen as the initial site. The two other New York airports have been selected as subsequent sites. Concourse is a leading provider of WiFi services to airport travelers at several major US airports.
According to the terms of the agreement, the WiFi phone service will use Concourse’s WiFi network to connect Concourse customers to the telecom company’s platform. Calls will be routed via their Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network and terminated on their worldwide telecommunications network and infrastructure. The trial is scheduled to begin this month.
The deployment at Newark Liberty Airport will allow WiFi calls to be placed via a range of communications devices. Participants in the test will be able to make calls with wireless VoIP handsets, and laptops or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) equipped with special client software referred to as a Softphone.
"Concourse is constantly looking at new service offerings to bring more value to our WiFi systems and believes that VoIP has that potential," said Joe Beatty, CEO of Concourse. "The experience gained from these trials will allow us to be better prepared to commercialize these offerings in the future."
